ZANZIBAR ISLAND
Zanzibar Island is located in the Indian Ocean, lying 22 miles (35 km) off the coast of Tanzania. In 1964 Zanzibar, together with Pemba Island and some other smaller islands, joined with Tanganyika on the mainland to form the United Republic of Tanzania.
The island is famous for its oldest part of Zanzibar City; Stone Town, also known as Mij Mkongwe, which is Swahili for 'Old Town'. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, it is known for its architecture, mostly dating back to the 19th century, reflects the diverse influences underlying the Swahili culture, giving a unique mixture of Arabic, Persian, Indian and European elements. The coastline is covered in the iconic white sand wide beaches, where beach lovers can sure to find their own slice of heaven and a relaxation paradise.
