Zanzibar consists of many small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, referred to informally as Zanzibar) and Pemba Island.
For those looking for a quiet, relaxing beach vacation, we recommend Pemba Island. Less busy than Unguja, Pemba Island has a much more secluded feel. For a mix of relaxation and the option of a little more adventure, we recommend Unguja Island, which is home to Stone Town - a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and an outstanding example of a Swahili trading town. This type of town developed on the coast of East Africa, further expanded under Arab, Indian, and European influences, but retained its original elements, to form an urban cultural unit unique to this region.
